Poking and sharing in the workplace by Michael Cheary The seemingly unstoppable rise of social networking means more and more businesses are jumping on the bandwagon and embracing social media to promote their products and services in ways traditional methods cant match.And yet, our latest research reveals that as many as two-in-three UK employees believe social networking should be banned from the workplace.As big fans of Facebook, Twitter and other social media ourselves, we were surprised by what we found.The study, which collected results from 4,245 workers from around the UK, showed that just 29% connect on Facebook, 13% use business social network LinkedIn, and just 9% keep on top of trends on Twitter during work hours.Of those who do use social media at work, one-in-three use it for business purposes only, half use it for both personal and business requirements, while the other 10% admit its just to keep in touch with friends and family.And, when it comes to keeping tabs on Twitter or updating a Facebook status, mobile takes the lead: 60% of UK employees opt to use their phone over a work computer.The research also revealed that one-in-four businesses have banned employees from browsing social networking sites during work hours. Whilst 40 do allow access, it’s almost always permitted for business purposes only.But social networks arent just about likes and pokes, they have an increasingly important role in business and in career development.Used in the right way, social networks offer a powerful platform for engaging with new customers, strengthening client relationships and gathering information.The participatory nature of Twitter and Facebook also makes them excellent tools for supercharging creativity in the workplace and your job hunt.Facebook and Twitter are here to stay, and for many, they’ve become the prominent form of communication. Daily Success Habits 12 Habits I Try To Do Everyday Today, I am going to take you behind the scenes and share twelve things you can do for success and happiness every day. Note, Disclaimer: I rarely do all 12 of these things. It is difficult to do one of these things every day! But I try, and that is what is important. Some are better than none and I always have a better day when I do some of these. I created this list about a few months ago after my daughter was born. I do not have the quiet or alone time that I used to have. But I try to get as many of things as I can. The days that I get to as many of these habits as possible I am happier. I know doing these things was part of what led to the success of our physical planner we recently released. If I had not been trying to do these things, I dont think I would have been in the right place mentally to actually make that goal happen. So, I believe great daily habits are going to help you reach your goals. Ideally going to the gym, taking a class. I try to get it in before lunchtime these days with a newborn.   Read personal development book:  Something positive and encouraging so I can learn something. Review goals: I review my annual goals so I know where I am headed. This will impact what I do that day and the ideas I have. My best ideas come while driving and while in the shower. Not working is when I have the best ideas. Reviewing my goals helps get those ideas flowing. Gratitude journal: Everyday I write down three things I am grateful for in my  gratitude journal. When you’re grateful for the things you have, those things instantly increase. The more gratitude you feel, the happier you will be. Studies show people who practice gratitude have closer relationships, are more connected to family and friends and have people look upon them more favorably.  Even being thankful for your boss will give you more patience, understanding, compassion, and kindness. You will forget about the things you use to complain about them if you are thankful for them. I once had a very tough client in my previous corporate consulting job who was not nice to me AT ALL, but I was and still am SO THANKFUL to her for showing me how to handle difficult clients and situations with class. This is exactly why I make it a habit in my morning routine to write down three things I am grateful for each day. It just makes me happier and gives me a better outlook for the day. Affirmations: If you listen to last week’s podcast, you know how much I believe in affirmations. Repeating positive statements every single day. I’ve been doing this with my daughter lately and we’ve been saying, I choose to make today the best day of my life. Journal/write: write a blog post or write in my 5-year journals for my daughter memories of our days. This is another form of gratitude for myself and my writing my blog helps me help others and that makes me happy. Sometimes its just writing an Instagram post on my @annarunyan account. As long as I’m doing this daily I feel better. Drink water: Fill up four bottles of water in the fridge the night before and try to drink them throughout the day. Work on my top priority: I have three priorities every week so every day I try to do something that will help me complete that priority. Vitamins: Gotta take them! Meditation: Even if its 30 seconds of shutting my eyes. Quiet is really hard to find in my house! Green smoothie: Spinach every day! Devotional: Reading my bible or daily devotionals that I get sent to me every day. Habits make them easy for you. Conveying to our relative how much we enjoyed the sauce on the pasta, I heard loud laughter.  t was meant to be a dip for vegetables or on bread as an appetizer! What does this have to do with developing business?  Everything! Communicate with Clarity By omitting instructions and forgetting to check for questions, people on the other end will misinterpret your meaning almost every time. In fact, the lack of clarity may well kill your chance for building business or getting the sale. Apply clarity to everything including: Conversations Correspondence Proposals The ultimate strategy is to follow-up each time by asking, Do you have any questions? Set Expectations for those partnering with you 1.  State your processes involved, expectations of the person helping you and your availability for assistance in getting started 2.  Provide a timeline for each step 3.   Help others to help you Remember, your teammates are not mind readers. Keep them informed every step of the way and behave as a reporter delivering the how, what, who, when, where and why so that you are on the same page.  Should social media help be provided, create the postings, tweets and unique links to empower the effort made on your behalf. Always make working with you easy! Ask for Feedback A smart technique to improve what you have in place is to always ask for feedback as to how the experience of working with you has been. While it is true complaints are never pleasant, when we brace ourselves to listen, much may be learned. In fact, some feedback may provide an “a-ha” moment to fast track what is already in place. The brighter side of feedback is you will be more likely to receive wonderful testimonials and referrals, as most people do not think to offer these. Build Relationships and When Disaster Hits Ask for Help Building business requires meeting many and voluntarily making introductions. Good will goes a long way and somewhere down the road will be reciprocated. When disaster strikes, asking for help and connections to those who might be in the best position to provide the help becomes a requirement. With sound relationships in place, peers and friends will creatively brainstorm with you and for you to help find a solution. The secret ingredient for coming out of a disaster zone as a winner is to keep an open mind as many ideas may come your way. Try those ideas first that appeal to you the most. Asking for help is often very difficult. But by allowing ourselves to ask and receive appropriately will further build and strengthen relationships. These are what make our businesses strong. Now, I will give you 7 ideas for promoting yourself within your current organization. Write regular project reports and status updates. Use project updates, status reports, memos and emails to convey your message. Spend time carefully writing monthly status reports and project updates so they support the fact that you take your position and career seriously and that you consistently deliver your promise of value. Focus on the results of the project, or the goals and milestones that you achieved or helped achieve. Write a newsletter article. Teach others about your areas of expertise by writing about it in the company newsletter, on the company’s web site or on the company’s blog. You have knowledge to share with your internal target audience that could strengthen and add credibility to your personal brand. Consider how to package your knowledge so that you can distribute it online. Make a presentation. Look for opportunities to present your message in person. Volunteer to give an update on your project or area of expertise at the next staff or management meeting. Consider mentoring or offering an internal class to teach others about your area of expertise. Create a new project to showcase your knowledge, skills or signature talents. Is there a project you can work on right now to demonstrate your expertise? If not, then could you create a project to do so? Figure out what you really love to do and make a proposal to a company or client to do it! Lead a team or project. An excellent way to raise your credibility is to be seen as a leader. Successfully leading a project or team demonstrates that you know how to meet deliverables, time lines and budget goals, and lead, manage and motivate others. Facilitate meetings.
